Republican Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer was lauded online after defying many members of her own party by vetoing an anti-gay bill Wednesday night

Senate Bill 1062 was designed to give added protection from lawsuits to people who assert their religious beliefs in refusing service to gays or others who offend their beliefs. However, opponents called it an open attack on gays that invited discrimination.

"I have not heard one example in Arizona where a business owner's religious liberty has been violated," Brewer said. "The bill is broadly worded and could result in unintended and negative consequences."

Arizona Senator John McCain backed Brewer, saying that everyone was welcome in his state.

Mitt Romney agreed.

Celebrities like Perez Hilton were also pleased with the news.

With his tongue firmly in his cheek, "Modern Family" star Jesse Tyler Ferguson praised Brewer's veto.

Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Brandon McCarthy criticized the proposed law.

He agreed with a statement released by Major League Baseball that said it had "a zero-tolerance policy for harassment or discrimination based on sexual orientation."

Rights groups also praised Brewer.
