An exasperated President Barack Obama on Tuesday tampered down his most mild expectations for Congress, simply calling on Capitol Hill to “just do something.”
In a speech aimed to rally support for a long-term fix for the Highway Trust Fund, Obama continued to deride Republicans for “political games” that have paralyzed Congress.
“Do something. That’s my big motto for Congress right now,” Obama said at the Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center in McLean, Va. “Just do something. And if they don’t like the transportation plan I put forward, at least come up with your own plan and then we can compromise.”
White House officials warn the Highway Trust Fund will soon run out of cash to pay for promised aid to states unless Congress acts. Both House and Senate committees have proposed short-term fixes.
Obama said he supports the stopgap measures but that Congress should not “pat itself on the back” for “kicking the can down the road.”
