A man who nearly ran over a police officer and tried to drive into crowded chicken wing festival in Reno, Nevada, was shot to death by authorities Sunday, police said.
No one else was injured during the incident, Reno police said in a statement, adding that "tragedy was averted."
During a news conference, Washoe County sheriff's spokesman Bob Harmon did not identify the driver.
Harmon said the suspect was an adult man in a silver minivan who "failed to yield" to a police officer's attempt to stop the vehicle Sunday afternoon in downtown Reno.
The motorist tried to drive through a barricade and into the Biggest Little City Wing Fest, an annual chicken wing event that attracts thousands of visitors, according to festival organizers. After the vehicle crashed into a vendor and swerved toward an officer, another officer fired at the van, Harmon said.
The man was pronounced dead a hospital, NBC station KRNV reported.
