Soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo has tested positive for the coronavirus, the Portuguese Football Federation announced Tuesday.
Ronaldo, 35, was tested while on international duty with the Portugese national team.
“Cristiano Ronaldo was released from the work of the National Team after a positive test for COVID-19, so he will not face Sweden,” the federation said in a statement.
The federation added that the rest of the Portugal squad has been tested and none of the other players were found to be infected as the team prepares to play Sweden on Wednesday.
Following a scoreless draw against France on Sunday, the Juventus forward posted a photo on his social media with his teammates which read, "United on and off the field."
This year, Ronaldo became the first soccer player to reach $1 billion in career earnings, and only the third active athlete to break through that barrier, according to NBC Sports, citing Forbes.
Last month in a match with Sweden, the Portugal-native scored his 100th international goal, making him only the second man in history to reach this milestone.
In 2009, he left Manchester United after a 6-year-stint for Real Madrid, where he’d later become the Spanish team’s leading all-time goal scorer.
Currently, Ronaldo is two years into a four-year contract with the Italian Juventus, and he captains Portugal’s national team.
