A 17-year-old Connecticut high student decided last fall that she could only bear the idea of going to her high school prom if she could attend on the arm of “the most delightful man in America."

That man? Joe Biden.

That’s what Talia Maselli of Newington, Conn., told the vice president in a handwritten invitation last year, according to the Harford Courant. (A spokeswoman for the vice president confirmed the story to NBC News.)

“I am inviting you so far in advance because I'm sure many 17-year-old girls send you prom invitations, and I had to beat them to it,” she wrote in a cheeky letter to the veep. (She also warned that she was considering House Speaker John Boehner as an alternative beau.)

But what Maselli didn’t really expect was a response from a man a heartbeat away from the presidency.

The day before the prom, she received a special delivery of a wristlet of roses and a handwritten note from Biden himself.

"I am flattered, but my schedule will not permit me to be in Connecticut on Friday evening," he wrote. "But I hope you will accept this corsage and enjoy your prom as much as I did mine."
